History of New France, Vol. I - Translated by Henry Percival Biggar. "Histoire de la Nouvelle-France initially appeared in 1609. This third edition (1617-18) appears in English translation as well as the original French. Volume I contains Books I and II. Book I recounts the 1524 voyage for Francis I of Giovanni da Verrazzano to North America, and the tragic efforts of Jean Ribault, René Goulaine de Laudonnière and Dominique de Gourges to establish a Huguenot colony in modern Florida in the 1560s. Book II is devoted to the failed effort by Nicolas Durand de Villegagnon in 1555 to establish a French presence in Brazil."
History of New France, Vol. II - "Volume 2 contains Books III and IV of the original third edition. Book III recounts Jacques Cartier's voyages of 1534 and 1535-36, his voyage of 1541-42, made under the aegis of the Sieur de Roberval, and the 1588 misfortunes of Jacques Noel and Chaton de la Jaunaye. It also includes Samuel de Champlain's St. Lawrence visit of 1603, and the failed penal colony on Sable Island of Troilus de La Roche de Mesqouez, 1598-1603. In Book IV, Lescarbot began to create original history, as the leading figures were personally known to him, he having overwintered at the Port Royal settlement in 1606-07. Book IV is devoted to the 1603-07 exploits of Champlain, Pierre Du Gua de Monts, and Jean de Biencourt de Poutrincourt."
History of New France, Vol. III - "This final volume in the Society's bilingual treatment of Lescarbot's Histoire de la Nouvelle France contains Book V and VI of the original third edition. In Book V Lescarbot addressed both Samuel de Champlain's trade and colonization efforts on the St. Lawrence between 1608 and 1613 and the Sieur de Poutrincourt's attempt to revive the Port Royal settlement, which ended with its destruction by the English in 1613. Book VI is devoted to "the Manners, Customs, and Fashion of Life of the Western Indians of New France."

Making of America - Digital library of primary sources consists of books and journal volumes between 1850 and 1877. The University of Michigan "collection currently contains approximately 8,500 books and 50,000 journal articles with 19th century imprints" and the Cornell collection "provides access to 267 monograph volumes and over 100,000 journal articles." Archives de Montréal - Archives of the city of Montréal. With Plan du Site. In the Guide to the archives there are a few lengthy descriptions of the contents of certain collections, for example see P86, Fonds du Rassemblement des citoyens et citoyennes de Montréal (RCM), a 51 page summary (in pdf format). In some cases actual access to documents is provided. For example in Marchés publics (VM41 Fonds de la Commission des marchés 1840-1910) the following scanned docements are available: Procès-verbaux; Rapports administratifs; Correspondance; Rapports; Baux; Dossiers thématiques. (Procès-verbaux 1840-1842 is a 43 page document.)
Archives nationales du Canada / National Archives of Canada - Use the
Documentary Art Database and the
Photographs Database to search for online images. The
Colonial Database "contains over 70,000 detailed descriptions (file or item) of textual documents in the archival collection, pertaining primarily to the British and French colonial periods and archival collections relating to the Catholic Church" and the
Government of Canada Files "contains about 1,2 million descriptions of files created by departments and agencies of the Federal Government of Canada including over 50,000 digital images." A search for Peter Winkworth, for example, will retrieve numerous images of French Canada. A search for chutes (waterfalls) will retrieve over 1,000 images, as does a search for Geog Quebec. Try searching for artists: Philip John Bainbrigge, James Pattison Cockburn, George Heriot, James Peachey, Katherine Jane Ellice, Elizabeth Frances Hale, Millicent Mary Chaplin, and Cornelius Krieghoff. A search for Gustave Bédard in Pistard will retrieve 85 photographs of a 1941 fishing expedition on the Metabetchouane and Metascouac rivers and Lac Hirondelle.

Not part of Canada at all, these islands are owned by the French Republic and are located 800 miles northeast of Boston at the top of the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. The Widow of Saint-Pierre (La Veuve de Saint-Pierre), a 2001 film featuring Juliette Binoche, Daniel Auteuil and Emir Kusturica and directed by Patrice Leconte is about events on these islands in 1849. It is based on a true story and was filmed in filmed in Quebec, Nova Scotia, and Paris in early 1999.
