Bespoke
- Term used for custom-made suits, shirts and shoes. Journalist Peter Howarth, in Tailored to a Suitable Price (Financial Times, 27 November 2004) provides this explanation:
In brief, the elements that go into making a pukka bespoke product: you start from scratch with measuring sessions, individual patterns are created, horsehair canvasses for inside the garment are washed, softened and hand-shaped over the knee, there's a great deal of hand-making, three fittings, six to 10 weeks waiting time, 65.5 manufacturing hours and a price tag of about £2,750 for a two-piece. Personal tailoring, on the other hand, is where you take an existing garment and make a version of it, largely by machine to the customer's specifications. You can change fabrics and linings and details and in four to six weeks have a pretty special result starting at that magical £695 for a two-piece.
- Further amplification is provided by Ray A. Smith in A Real Savile Row (Wall Street Journal, April 14-15, 2007):
William Skinner worries that customers will think that made-to-measure, which typically involves using a stock pattern that is then adjusted to fit the client's measurements and taste, is the same thing as bespoke or custom...Custom suits are made entirely from scratch - mostly by hand, in a process that can take at least two or three fittings and at least eight weeks. More than 20 measurements are taken for a besopke garment.
- Saville Rogues: London's Rakish Tailors - Intelligent Life Magazine, Summer 2009.
In the last analysis, the Savile Rogues are doing what tailors have always done: cutting their stylistic coats according to the commercial cloth. A bespoke outfit will cost the customer, say, £2,800 for a basic two-piece suit. The cloth will account for £750 or more of that, and there'll be an average of 75 hours' skilled labour involved in making it. The tailor will probably net about £500 to cover other overheads and profit - it's not the road to riches. However fine your craftsmanship, however heartfelt your aesthetic principles, if nobody is buying, you will not survive. The law of top-of-the-scale bespoke tailoring, like the law of the jungle, is find your niche.

"For what the company says are 'competitive reasons', it won't release the name of the English tannery that supplies the leather, although it is supposedly the oldest in the world, founded during the Roman Empire. The leather is cut from a specific spot on a particular breed of cow. Typical cowhides cost a few hundred dollars; Kale Miles pays "in the thousands" for theirs."

It includes more than 100 Italians of different ages photographed with their families, friends, children and an assortment of dogs in splendid historic palaces and the countryside, representing the Italian way of living and a certain style that goes beyond fashion and time. This absorbing gallery of people includes all kinds of Italian citizens, like the sophisticated Tuscan prince, for example, who teaches International Law at university, edits a daily newspaper and manages his large winery at San Gimignano. There is the handsome Sicilian prince who rents the family palace for events, but who is also an entrepreneur and owns farms and eco-sustainable real estate. There is also the young marquis from Liguria who moved from Manhattan to Monferrato to manage the family company producing oil and wine. They are all very elegant in jeans and moccasins, all testament to a current but timeless style that is undeniably Italian and famous throughout the world. This is a book for enthusiasts of fashion and style, but it is also for those who love period interiors, city palaces, castles in the hills, and Italian landscapes, all ancient but alive and vibrant as ever."
- Lizzie Widdicombe (Department of Hoopla, "That's Italian,", New Yorker, November 2, 2009, p. 44) describes a recent party held at the Madison Avenue store marking the launch of the book. - To learn more about Wilfred Grenfell and the Grenfell Labrador Medical Mission see Labrador doctor: my life with the Grenfell Mission by William Anthony Paddon. This book contains an interesting account of the author's experience on August 8, 1949 on board the Maraval, a 20 meter diesel motorsailer, in the high seas near Maidment Island. On board with him was the Life Magazine photographer George Silk. You can access the full-text of the following books via HathiTrust:

- Dr. Grenfell's parish: the deep sea fisherman by Norman Duncan, F.H. Revell, [1910?]
- A Labrador doctor; the autobiography of Wilfred Thomason Grenfell, Boston, Houghton Mifflin, 1919. In his autobiography, Grenfell talks about cold-weather clothing:
Clothing must be light; to perspire in cold weather is unpardonable, for it will freeze inside your clothes at night. fortunately warmth depends only on keeping heat in; and we find an impervious, light, dressed canvas best. The kossak should be made with, so to speak, no neck through which the heat which one produces can leak out. The headpiece must be attached to the tunic, which also clips tight round the wrists and round the waist to retain the head. The edges may be bound with fur, especially about the hood, so as to be soft and tight about the face, and to keep the air out. The Eskimo cuts his own hair so as to fill that function. Light sealskin boots are best for all weathers, but in very cold, dry seasons, deerskin dressed very soft is warmer. The skin boot should be sewn with sinew which swells in water and thus keeps the stitches water-tight. These skin boots are made by the Eskimo women who chew the edges of the skin to make them soft before sewing them with deer sinew." (pp. 200-201).
Our ideal has been to obtain light, wind-and water proof material, and a pattern that prevents leakage of the body's heat from the neck, wrists, waist, knees and ankles. Our skin boots, by being soft, water-tight, and roomy, remove the causes of trench feet. Later when I returned to England I was invited to the War Office to talk over the matter. The defects, either in wet and cold or in hot weather, of woolen khaki cloth are obvious, and when subsequently I visited the naval authorities in Washington about the same subject, I was delighted to be assured that on all smal naval craft our patterns were being exclusively used (pp. 384-385).
